PREVENT PYROPHORIC FIRES

Safely deactivate pyrophoric iron scale from your raw inlet gas filters

Gas filters used to process natural gas can gather iron sulfide deposits, which cause the filter to lower its performance and generates significant heat. FQE® Pyrophoric is a non-toxic, non-hazardous product that is safer to apply than other methods available (i.e., potassium permanganate or acidification).

FQE Pyrophoric vs. potassium permanganate

FQE Pyrophoric
50% more cost effective
50% reduction in downtime; mitigation is twice as fast
No residual manganese byproduct
No adverse effects on waste water treatment
Product is selective only to FeS
Potassium Permanganate
Big chemical cost as KMnO4 is expensive
Extended processing times; by extra days and not hours
An abundance of manganese dioxide solids for disposal
Large volumes of water for disposal
Non-selective

Trusted by Natural Gas producers across North America

Raw inlet gas filters remove entrained solids present in the incoming feedstock natural gas and typically require change-outs every month. These filters are typically contaminated with pyrophoric iron sulfide and have smoldering issues resulting from the iron sulfide reaction with oxygen in the air.

Water is often used to soak the filters for disposal, resulting in increased disposal costs due to waste volume. Filters that have dried up often pose a potential fire risk. FQE Pyrophoric is a safe and environmentally friendly product that inhibits the oxidation reaction process from taking place.

You will typically save at least 30% in long-term costs compared to using an oxidizer like potassium permanganate. Our product is selective only to FeS, and typical oxidizers are non-selective.

Frequently asked questions

How does FQE Pyrophoric work?

FQE Pyrophoric does not work by means of oxidation and functions as an antioxidant. Our chemical bonds with the FeS and works as an antioxidant to prevent any oxidation reactions from occurring.

The product is designed to be specific to FeS and does not react with other materials (compared to competitor oxidation driven products). It is also designed to be environmentally and personnel safe as a biodegradable, non-hazardous product.

How long does FQE Pyrophoric take to work?

The reaction is instantaneous in nature.

What temperatures does FQE Pyrophoric need to be applied at?

The product can be applied at a variety of different temperatures.

Is the effluent generated by FQE Pyrophoric hazardous?

The product is non-hazardous and does not react to create any hazardous byproducts. The classification of waste will be dependent on any hazardous materials being constituents of the original effluent, and anything else added to the final waste stream.

It was designed to be environmentally and personnel safe as a biodegradable, non-hazardous product.

How is FQE Pyrophoric applied?

Diluted Application: It is recommend to dilute the product between 10-20% in water. This leaves enough active ingredient to penetrate the filter deposits and treat the internals of the vessel. You would need to dispose of the resulting effluent as you cannot confirm active ingredient concentration in the fluid without specialized equipment.

Neat Application: Add the product at a 100% neat concentration and preserve the unreacted product that comes out for future use. As long as 100 neat material is available, it is still active material.

How do you determine that the product is still active when diluted, and how do you test for the effectiveness of FQE Pyrophoric chemistry during the application?

If required, a proprietary test can be used by your field staff to confirm the presence of active ingredients. A test to confirm active ingredient content elimination or presence is used to confirm the efficiency of the FQE Pyrophoric product.

As long as you detect the active, you have enough FQE Pyrophoric in the process.  If you show no active FQE Pyrophoric, the material had been consumed and you need additional product added to your cleaning solution.

Since the FQE Pyrophoric product is a concentrate, can the residual product be reused?

That is correct, the product is a concentrate, and when used in filter dip applications, the same batch can be used for multiple dip applications in the same batch.

As long as you have product available, there is active ingredient present and therefore the material will continue to function.

Please note if the product is diluted with water, it would need to be tested to confirm that active material is still present.

Is there any color change associated with the reaction?

There is no color change associated with our product as it is not a potassium permanganate based material.

How do you dispose of the FQE Pyrophoric product?

FQE Pyrophoric was designed to be non-hazardous and it as well as any byproducts can be processed through wastewater treatment.

How should FQE Pyrophoric be stored and what is the shelf life of the product?

Product should be stored away in an enclosed area. Recommended Shelf Life is 1 year.

In cold weather locations, we have a freeze protected version of the product at -15F called FQE Pyrophoric-W. The FQE Pyrophoric product is good for 15F.

What packaging sizes can FQE Pyrophoric be purchased in?

FQE Pyrophoric is sold in 55 gallons poly drums, 330 Gallon Totes, and bulk quantities in most geographical Locations.

Minimum order quantities/volumes may apply regions outside of North America.

FQE Pyrophoric is trusted by Natural Gas producers across North America.
