New Blog, Who’s This?

Reading Time: 4 minutes
Chris Tanguay, new author of the blog introduces himself and gives a teaser of the kind of blogs we can expect to see in the coming months.

Hi all! I’d like to introduce myself as the new writer for the blog. I’m Chris Tanguay, Manager of Technology at FQE Chemicals.

I’ve been working in the chemical industry for over 20 years, with my last role being Director of R&D. I started at the bottom as a lab technician mixing chemicals and cleaning lab spaces all while I was pursuing my chemical engineer degree.  As I have progressed through a variety of roles, including a manufacturing role and R&D research scientist, and as I earned my Masters degree in Chemistry – the one thing that has stayed constant is my innate passion for learning something new every day, and a constant pursuit of new information and problems to solve. The excitement and joy of taking a concept prototype product from a few grams, to patenting that concept and scaling-up to commercialization where millions of pounds of chemistry are sold is one of the most rewarding things I’ve experienced in my career. I’ve had the honor of leading project teams and working with some great people along the way to receiving 8 patents and launching over 16 new products with over 200 million pounds sold.

“My goal is to factually share educational insights into the world of chemistry related to contaminants, applications and the latest industry news.”

I approach all new projects with open and clear mindset. Background literature search is essential to understanding the foundation of the science and to developing a practical application approach through a statistical path forward. Including, everything from the design of experiments to defining the design space through actual tangible numbers and metrics. Data driven decisions are mandatory. Results and conclusions are based on numbers, not on opinions.

Up until now the blog has focused on refinery fouling and the chemistry behind the issues that refiners encounter daily. These informative deep dives have been a great resource. But with the new website launching, we wanted to continue extending the topics of our blogs to include all the industries that we work with. This includes natural gas processing, mining, waste treatment and petrochemicals industries, and of course still includes refineries.

“One thing that has stayed constant is my innate passion for learning something new every day, and a constant pursuit of new information and problems to solve.”

Since I’ve always been an advocate for sharing learned experience, I want to use the blog posts here to discuss the scientific mindset. Including nonbiased data and how driving best practices and learnings is imperative for shedding light on some of the fundamental challenges faced by industries – How to balance contaminant remediation strategy and maintaining a safe, efficient and profitable operations?

My goal is to factually share educational insights into the world of chemistry related to contaminants, applications and the latest industry news. I’m looking forward to sharing this topic expansion with you in the coming months, so stay tuned!
